Year 2 - Miss Beynon
What a spectacular few weeks we have had in Year Two! The Great Fire of Birchgrove was a roaring success, and the children have written amazing recounts about it.
The children have been busy learning how to measure accurately using a rulers and cm. We have been busy estimating and measuring everything in sight and have even learned how to measure round objects! Ask your children to show you how!!!
TT Rockstars continues to be popular in year two, please can you encourage your children to log in twice a week if possible.
The children have been listening to the story of Kassim and the Greedy Dragon this week, as we launch our new topic of Dragons in readiness for our very special visitor, Professor Know-it-all, a real life Dragonologist after half term!
For half term homework, we would like your children to learn our doubles rap – we would love to see their performances tweeted on the school website #doublesrap.
Please can we remind parents that pencil cases, toys and jewellery are not to be sent into school.
Have a wonderful half term, and thank you for your continued support this half term.
Year Two Staff
Year two have had a fantastic start to the autumn term. The children have settled in well and have enjoyed planning activities for our theme 'Fire' for the term ahead. The children have made the most of both the indoor and outdoor learning environments
So far this term we have worked together to learn our Talk for Writing text 'The Great Fire of London'. We are sure that you will find that the children are already knowledgeable about the topic and keen to find out more. In numeracy we have been focusing on place value of numbers to 100 and beyond. We are now looking forward to moving on to properties of 2D shapes.
The term ahead is going to be very busy with several visits planned and Kerbcraft due to start next week on on Wednesdays and Thursdays (volunteers are welcome to support this activity).
Thanks for your continued support,
Year Two Teachers
It has been a 'Spacetastic' week in year two!
Our visit to Techniquest was a blast! We boarded the bus to Cardiff 5...4...3...2...1 and off we zoomed!
Exploring the exciting activities at Techniquest with our fellow astronauts was a hands on experience that was out of this world! We have uploaded many photos to our Twitter feed, please have a look if you have not done this already.
We were so proud of your children and their cosmic behaviour. Ray from Techniquest was dazzled with the knowledge that your children had about space! What a wonderful day it was!
Thank you to all of the parents who attended parents evening last week. It was lovely to catch up with you and share with you the progress that your super sonic children are making!
REMINDER - Next Friday the 29th March - the Mathstars are leading a Mathstar class for parents at 3:30 where they will be sharing the Maths strategies we use in school. We would love to see you there!
Thanks for your ongoing support.

What a fantastic week we had in Blwyddyn Ddau! Wythnos arbennig!
Our theme this year was Welsh legends. We read the story of Rhitta Gawr - a Welsh giant and using this story we decided to create our own giants. We had lots of fun using our Welsh and using the geiriau (dictionaries) to label features of our giants and their clothing in Welsh.
When we had finally completed our giant, we used our oracy skills to ask and answer questions about our giant yn Cymraeg! Our teachers were very impressed! We then used our giant to write a character description about it in Welsh. Gwaith bendigedig pawb!
The highlight of our week was the Eisteddfod. The children looked spectacular in their Welsh costumes, and we had great fun celebrating our Welsh culture as a school. The Eisteddfod allowed us to enjoy performances from Reception all the way up to year six, and the children were captivated by the performances from each year group.
Blwyddyn Dau sang a song called Baboon on the Moon in Welsh. The song told the story of a day in Baboon's life on the moon. It was very impressive! Parents attending our class assemblies will be treated to another performance of this song, a very catchy tune which we hope you will enjoy.
Lots of photos were uploaded to Twitter during Welsh Week, but we have added some more below in case you missed them.
It has been a very busy and exciting fortnight in year two! The children have now become trainee astronauts!!
The children have been learning lots of exciting facts about the Solar System and continue to amaze us with their wonderful Space facts!
The children have used their "POP time" (planning our provision) to think of exciting challenges around the Space theme and are using their "COOL time" (Choosing our own learning) to complete the tasks. Keep an eye on Twitter to see some of the COOL time photos.
The children have been using their skills to programme human Beebots and safely navigate them around our Solar System outside in the Forest School. They have been sequencing and ordering the giant planets using ordinal numbers. In Numeracy they have been using number lines to help them with tricky addition and subtraction work.
In Literacy we have been reading the story Laura's Star and discussing should Laura keep the star or send it back home? The children are starting to become really good at using the language of discussion and we are sure you will be amazed with their discussion skills at home in the next few weeks!
Children have voted for new Golden Time activities for the Spring Term, golden time choices include: Fitness activities, biscuit decorating, ipad time, drawing, making slime as well as many others!
On February 12th we are taking part in a Scooter Skills Session during school time. Please can you return the consent forms to us as soon as you can?
Letters have also been sent home for our Spring Term Trip to Techniquest, if you have misplaced either of these letters, replacements are available from the school office.
Thank you for your continued support.
